Why Hong Kong?

It is the major gateway that connects Mainland China with rest of the world, and SLT Hong Kong is the premier point for SLT to expand its business to the booming Chinese market.

The company was formed in 2006 and holds licenses from the OFTA (Office of the Telecommunications Authority) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, which allow the company to provide domestic and international voice and data services. Sri Lanka Telecom is one of the owners of the SEA-ME-WE 3 submarine cable which connects 39 destinations around the world. This, along with the OFTA licenses, enables SLT Hong Kong to provide submarine cable capacity services from Hong Kong to destinations in Asia, the United States and Europe.

International voice is another business that has been brought about because of SLT Hong Kong’s geographical location. Being in Hong Kong has made it possible for the company to offer attractive business propositions to small telecom carriers to connect to Sri Lanka Telecom in Hong Kong itself. This eliminates the international connectivity costs that these carriers would have otherwise had to bear in connecting to Sri Lanka.

SLT Hong Kong is also specialized in providing data solutions such as International Private Leased Circuits (IPLC), Virtual private Networks based on MPLS technology (IP VPN), and IP Transit Services to corporations in Hong Kong as well as surrounding countries in the region, connecting them with the rest of the world. Having incorporated this subsidiary provides a considerable step forward for Sri Lanka Telecom to become a regional telecommunications facilitator.
